01 — Brief & site

A tropical home for year-round living

The brief was for a compact, low-maintenance villa on a Nathon plot that could be lived in comfortably through every season on Koh Samui — full sun, monsoon rain, and the humid stretch between. At 155 sqm the design had to work hard: every room earns natural cross-ventilation, and the site's orientation was used to frame the approach and protect the private side of the plot from the road.

02 — Design response

Traditional form, contemporary detailing

A contemporary Thai-inspired home designed for tropical living, combining natural ventilation, modern comfort, and low-maintenance materials. Traditional roof forms and deep overhangs capture sea breezes and provide strong climate protection, while the layout frames key views, protects privacy, and connects open-plan living with shaded outdoor spaces and the pool.

03 — Materials & climate

Built for the humidity, not against it

Material choices favour finishes that shrug off Samui's humidity rather than fighting it — surfaces that clean easily, resist mould, and age well without a maintenance contract. The deep overhangs that define the roofline aren't decorative: they keep direct sun and driving rain off the walls and openings for most of the year, which is what actually keeps a tropical villa comfortable and low-cost to run.

04 — Living arrangement

Open-plan living around the pool

Living, dining and kitchen sit as one open volume that opens directly onto the shaded terrace and pool, so the boundary between inside and outside stays soft for most of the day. Bedrooms are positioned for privacy and cross-breeze rather than view alone, which on a 155 sqm footprint meant testing the layout against sun and wind before committing to it.

05 — Delivery

Seven months from groundbreaking to handover

Construction ran seven months from groundbreaking to handover. The client managed the build directly from Nay's drawings, and the villa was delivered in January 2026.

"Thank you for designing a beautiful and comfortable home for me."
